Sleeping Through the Seasons
Summer is coming to an end and fall is quickly approaching. We’re looking forward to pumpkin spice lattes, sweater weather, falling leaves and holidays with our family. And soon, we’ll be pulling out the blankets and bundling to stay warm. Most of us do not put much thought into it, but as the weather changes so does our sleep.
When it comes to sleep, planning for the seasonal changes and the weather’s influence can help prepare you for changes in your sleep patterns. Winter is a particularly important season in this regard. To get technical, changes in atmospheric pressure, humidity and precipitation influence our bodies in many ways. The cooler and drier air that comes along with the winter months actually helps us get to sleep and stay asleep longer, which is something we can all look forward to!
According to The National Sleep Foundation, research says throughout the night your body temperature rises and falls slightly, “The ideal room temperature for rest is 65 degrees, which makes for the best sleep”.
Although cooler air is best for a restful sleep, fall and winter also bring along the cold and flu season, which can make sleep uncomfortable. Illness can cause increased snoring habits, runny noses, coughing and restless sleep, none of which are in our favor!
